The objective of this project is to develop a novel biomaterial for removal of arsenic, lead and chromium from water. We propose to use algae derived diatom as a host to immobilize activated carbon prepared from carbonization of a polymer such as polydivylbenzene. To help ease the separation of the biomaterial after water treatment, it will be coated with magnetite, which will allow magnetic separation and also serve as an adsorbent. The biomaterial will be tested for adsorption and characterized based on silica:carbon:magnetite ratios, surface area and porosity. This research will lead to the development of a novel adsorbent for heavy metal removal, and also serve as a platform for the removal of other pollutants.
