Abstract

Photopolymerization has become a common technology for a wide variety of applications including coatings and adhesives and recently for biotechnology. The fast polymerization kinetics under physiological conditions, the chemical versatility, and the spatial and temporal control has led to photopolymerization becoming an important processing method for the fabrication of biomaterials. In this chapter, we discuss the basics of photopolymerization reactions, specific polymer systems that are photopolymerized, the characterization of photopolymerization reactions, some of the important parameters that influence photopolymerization, and general applications with special emphasis on dental materials, tissue engineering, and drug delivery.
