Abstract

Bandwidth usage efficiency and transmission latency are two important figures of merit to evaluate a system design for the next generation network. We propose a bandwidth enhancement mechanism for a recently introduced forward resource reservation (FRR) transmission scheme, which is designed to reduce the end-to-end data burst delay in an optical burst switching (OBS) network. After presenting the principle of the bandwidth enhancement mechanism, we analyze and evaluate its performance in terms of bandwidth savings and the associated operating cost. Simulation results also demonstrate the advantages of the bandwidth enhanced FRR scheme as compared to the basic FRR scheme.
