Abstract

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are found to be useful in many areas like military applications, emergency operations, wireless sensor network, and distributed computing. However, designing an effective, efficient and Quality-of-Service (QoS) supported MAC protocol for MANET is inherently difficult as they lack a central coordinator. This paper first classifies MAC protocols into two categories: single and multiple channel protocols. Then it analyzes the requirements for ad hoc MAC. A Dynamic-Bandwidth-Allocation-with- Collision-Avoidance MAC Design is proposed and its throughput is theoretically analyzed. We conclude that it is an effective, efficient and QoS-supported MAC design.
