Abstract
This paper proposes a flow-network-oriented approach that hierarchically addresses the problem of cellular layout design. It consists of three major phases: (1) Utilize the K-Shortest Path method to rationalize the various flows of a system into a master flow network; (2) Based on this flow network, plan a flow pattern and designate the aisle structure for the system; (3) Locate and allocate cells around the flow pattern and the aisle structure within a restricted floor plan. These three phases compose an integrated interactive layout design process. The applicability of this approach as well as its effectiveness is illustrated by case studies.
