Abstract
This essay focuses on Bo Bardi’s (1914-92) adaptive reuse projects in Brazil. It is particularly concerned with the ways in which her work marked a new approach to heritage and sustainable design within Brazilian architecture. The main objective is to critically revisit the architect’s work within the Brazilian context by analyzing two projects: the Solar do Unhão (Unhão’s Manor, 1959-63) and the Centro de Lazer Fábrica da Pompéia (Pompéia Factory Leisure Centre, 1977-86), known as SESC Pompéia. The cases presented here show Bo Bardi’s innovative and provocative work, where she sought to question the role played by local characters and regional identity in architecture.
