Coherent terahertz detection: Free space electro-optic sampling versus antenna detection

Abstract

The performance of a free-space electro-optic sampling (FSEOS) technique and a photoconducting antenna as detectors for terahertz electric field emitter were compared. The electrooptic detection was shown to have a much higher bandwidth and the roll-off beyond 0.5 THz was the real response of the emitter. If the balanced photodiode pair in the FSEOS setup works close to the shot noise limit and the probe power is a few mW, the SNR of both detection schemes are comparable. The use of FSEOS detection for the calibrating the terahertz electric field and the power emitted from singular electric field emitters is also shown.
