Abstract

This paper describes linear and nonlinear responses of column-supported cooling towers. Linear elastic seismic and wind response analyses have been performed. For seismic loads, deterministic methods are used and for wind loads, both deterministic and probabilistic methods are used. Probabilistic responses are obtained using both frequency- and time-domain analyses, based on quasi-steady aerodynamic theory and also ARIMA (Auto-Regressive Integration Moving Averages) models. For a realistic wind load model, the results obtained using the frequency- and time-domain analyses are compared. (Edited author abstract. )
