Abstract
Conveying and compaction of particulate solids, pellets, or powders occur in two regions of the extruder; the hopper, where gravitational flow provides a constant feed stream to the very start of the feed section of the screw, and the feed zone of the extruder, where the particulate solid bed is compacted and conveyed as a solid plug down the deep helical channel formed by the feed section of the screw and the barrel. The paper presents a device capable of providing information on the compaction and solid bed conveying phenomena in single screws.
