Abstract

This chapter focuses on the notion of culture-bound syndromes (CBS) and related diagnostic challenges. The treatment of culture and the inclusion of CBS in diagnostic classification systems, such as the DSM, are reviewed. The authors discuss the limitations of diagnostic classification systems, including their use cross-culturally, and directions for future classification and research of CBS.
