Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that vertical vibration of bridges alone or in conjunction with lateral motion can cause serious damage and even lead to collapse. To demonstrate this, the preliminary results of two case studies are presented. These include the San Fernando Road Overhead Bridge, and the Rio Del Overpass. Study conclusions are also presented.
