Abstract

A scheme for enhancing and purifying fingerprint images is presented. Detailed descriptions of adaptive filtering, noise elimination, and purification of characteristics are the main topics of the paper. The proposed method for the purification of characteristics uses both foreground and background characteristics; that is, ridge and valley minutiae. This duality allows a fast and effective purification for ridge breaks. The approach applies to distorted and damaged fingerprint images.
