Abstract

An experiment has been conducted indicating invalidity of the assumption of negligible intermediate-joint axial forces in Cardan joint (universal joint) dynamic analysis. It has been observed that increased driveline torque induces the radially-inward deflection of the yoke arms of a Cardan joint, while increased speed will deflect the yoke arms outward. Some suggestions are given to optimize Cardan joints for high torque or high speed.
