Abstract

For the control of a mechanical system in which the all the position variables but none of the velocity variables are measured, a reduced-order observer approaches a bank of high-pass filters. Use of high-pass filters in place of reduced-order observers can offer advantages in robustness and in implementation. Several examples are presented to show these advantages.
