abstract = "This paper discusses strategies for the integration of embedded technologies within the built environment to optimize and increase occupant safety and egress. It builds on synergies between building components with embedded smart technologies and enhanced occupant interactions. The {\textquoteleft}Smart Egress{\textquoteright} project facilitates building occupant evacuation during emergencies. It integrates distributed sensing and traffic/occupancy monitoring with adaptive signage and wayfinding—physical building assets interconnected with virtual counterparts (digital twins)—a customizable web-based dashboard to monitor activities and for direct controls as well as a mobile app. The {\textquoteleft}Emergency Response{\textquoteright} projects extends that approach with web-based interfaces for occupants and first responders. It provides emergency responders with visualization of building occupancy and temperature data in individual rooms and spaces. This allows for targeted actions optimizing responders{\textquoteright} time and building conditions.",
