Abstract

Performances of improved cellulose acetate (CA) membranes at low pressures of operation for feed brine concentrations varying between 5,000 and 60,000 ppm have been described and compared. Substantial lowering of the operating pressure is possible with these improved CA membranes for desalination of both brackish water and sea water. A conceptual scheme for an improved reverse osmosis concentration-cum-evaporation process has also been proposed for sugar juice concentration.
