Abstract

Luminescence from metallic quantum well system Na on Cu(111) was studied. The tunneling current of a scanning tunneling microscope caused the light emission. Optical spectra and tunneling spectroscopy observations revealed that one component of emission was due to interband transitions between quantum well states of Na layer. The other emission was found to be similar to plasmon mediated emission.
