Abstract

A new method for the shape optimization of elastic bodies subject to stress constraints is presented. A set of corrective forces is obtained based on the difference of the actual stress state compared to the desired stress level. These corrective forces are applied to the body with modified boundary conditions to deform the body towards its optimal configuration. The final optimal design is obtained after a number of iterations involving such steps. A series of examples of mechanical components are presented and the optimal shapes obtained with the present method agree well with those available in the literature.
