Abstract
A methodology is presented for describing and supporting the product design and innovation process for engineers and managers. The methodology is generic, in other words generally applicable to any product, anywhere in the world. The heart of the methodology is a structured, object oriented functional analysis using the CIMpgr method, developed by the author. Following this structured framework each component or sub-assembly of the product design is analyzed and valued in terms of function, quality, cost and other aspects. Having done the analysis, the losers become the target for innovation guided by a structured framework. The method summarized in the paper has already been successfully applied in the area of electro-mechanical and automobile industries and further work is progressing in the area of creating an integrated research toolset for product innovation.
