Abstract

The use of smooth ring theories to investigate the ring gear dynamics was discussed. The dynamic finite element method (FEM) was applied to verify the accuracy of the smooth ring theories. The dynamic FEM was used to analyze the modal frequencies of unconstrained ring gears and circular rings. It was observed that in most cases, the splines and teeth had significant effect on the natural frequency values of ring gear structure. The application of smooth ring theories to complex ring gear for removing gear whine problems was also found to be feasible.
