Abstract
This paper presents a few fundamental results related to the problem of detection of intermittent faults in combinational circuits. A statistical model for the activity period of an intermittent fault is introduced and the properties of random testing of these faults are discussed. The concept of escape probability is used for evaluating the quality of testing and it is shown to provide an acceptable stopping rule for the detection procedure. It is shown that there always exists a deterministic test procedure which has at least the same test quality as any proposed random test procedure.
