Abstract

This paper presents an overview of a novel, microporous membrane-based, dispersion-free, solvent extraction process. New data on the system n-butanol-water-succinic acid is provided to demonstrate the usefulness of this technique for emulsion-prone systems. Equations are presented for designing a hollow fiber membrane-based solvent extraction column. A comparison is made between a hydrophobic hollow fiber module and a packed bed extractor for the system n-butanol-water-succinic acid. Applications of this technique to bioseparations and extractive fermentation processes are discussed.
