Abstract
Experiments on the fluidization of spherical particles between two parallel glass plates and in a perspex column with a rectangular cross section are described. The flow regimes and flow mechanisms are discussed. The regimes are dominated by inertial effects associated with wakes together with drafting, kissing and tumbling into stable cross stream arays. Experiments were also carried out using cylinders of different length to diameter ratios and discs. Flow regimes and experimental results are discussed.
