Abstract
This paper shows how knowledge of transverse and longitudinal mixing may be obtained from a single experiment utilizing an inert tracer which is added to the feed and subsequently analyzed in the effluent. Molten effluent is sliced, after cooling into plane wafers orthogonal to the direction of flow. The degree and quality of longitudinal mixing may be characterized by means of the residence time distribution which is obtained from the mean tracer content of each wafer along the direction of flow.
