Abstract

An overview of the large body of work published on the Eberlin acetalization and transacetalization reactions and related gas phase ion/molecule reactions is given. The reaction occurs for many classes of amphoteric cations with dual Lewis acidity and basicity with cyclic acetals, diols, and related compounds. Extensive fundamental, synthetic, and analytical applications of the gas-phase Eberlin reaction, as well as close connections with condensed-phase chemistry are reviewed.
