Abstract
The pressure induced I1 to IV phase transition in KNO3 has been studied by Raman scattering. In the antiferroelectric phase 11, the translational shear modes show larger pressure coefficients than the NOS- rotational vibrations, which were found to be weakly coupled at 295 K. In phase IV a drastic change in the potential around N03-sites occurs and the rotational modes show sizable pressure coefficients. The Raman data suggest that phase 1V has a structure of relatively low symmetry.
