Abstract
A new method for the digestion of heavy metals in soil and sediments is discussed. The method, pressure-assisted chelating extraction (PACE), enables the use of chelates as sequestrates for the removal of the metals in solid matrices. PACE provides an ideal platform through which metal ions can be quickly extracted using pressure-assisted, thermal equilibration of the chelate with the metal of interest. The method provides and alternative digestion technique for environmental samples, alloys, biological materials, and samples of geological importance. Moreover, the procedure takes minutes rather than the hours needed for the wet acid digestion technique.
