Abstract
When performing a rainfall runoff study, it is sometimes necessary to change the duration of a given unit hydrograph. The instantaneous unit hydrograph (IUH) provides an ideal tool to change hydrograph duration. To demonstrate, we use least squares optimization to estimate the parameters of the classic Nash IUH from effective rainfall and direct runoff data at two watersheds. Results agree well with previous Nash IUH parameters estimated from existing unit hydrographs. The IUH method offers a simple but rigorous approach for generating unit hydrographs of any desired duration.
