title = "Scheduling highway maintenance projects with genetic algorithms",
abstract = "The schedule of highway work zones significantly affects maintenance project cost and duration as well as the convenience of traveling public and local businesses. Optimization of work zone schedules may result in substantial benefits to responsible agencies, contractors and roadway users in terms of reduced costs, delay and safety hazards. The work zone scheduling problem is a large combinatorial optimization problem and difficult to be solved analytically. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) developed in this study may assist transportation agencies to schedule work zone lane closures more efficiently. An example is presented to demonstrate the application of the developed GA.",
