Abstract

A series of lysimeter experiments was undertaken in order to evaluate the performance of selected natural and synthetic sorbents for their removal characteristics of various components present in leachate from hazardous industrial sludges which have been disposed of by landfilling. The particular sorbents studied were basic fly ash, acidic fly ash, zeolite, vermiculite, illite, kaolinite, activated alumina and activated carbon. The leachates utilized in the study were generated from a Calcium Fluoride sludge, a Petroleum Sludge and a Metal Finishing Sludge. The results indicate, while no single sorbent could remove all the constituents present in any of the leachate streams, selective combination of the sorbents studied could achieve total removal. In addition, the absorbed constituents are retained by the sorbents after extensive washing. 6 rfs.
