note = "Funding Information: From the empirical front: 1. What are the state-of-the-art applications in the academic field and in the industry? 2. How to communicate analytical procedures and results to policy makers, interest groups, and the public? 3. How to educate the next generation workforce? 4. Which fields or types of urban and regional problems could benefit the most from spatiotemporal analysis? 5. What are the domains that don{\textquoteright}t have sufficient spatial analysis and modeling applications? 6. Why there has been so little penetration of spatiotemporal analysis both in academia and practice? “GIS in Economic Development, Regional Planning and Environmental Protection” is the theme of the 21th International Conference on Geoinformatics (Geoinformatics 2013) on 20-22 June 2013 at Kaifeng, China. This special issue aims to provide a forum on new algorithms, statistics, software development, and applications on Urban and Regional Development. Six papers have been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication in this special issue of the Annals of Geographical Information Science in 2013. We thank all authors and reviewers for their contributions to the special issue. We would like to acknowledge the funding of the Chinese Ministry of Education (13JJD790008).",
