note = "Funding Information: literature has grown enormously along with the advancement of cutting-edge geospatial technologies. Most of the previously published studies analyze only the cross-sectional relationship and fail to account for temporal dynamics. This special issue adds to the existing research by empirically studying both the spatial and temporal aspects of crime patterns at various spatial scales. Because crime occurs across space and over time, the integration of geography and criminology has the power of leading to a better understanding of the relationship between crime and place at various spatial and temporal scales. {\textquoteleft}Spatial crime analysis and modeling{\textquoteright} is the main theme of the Twentieth International Conference on Geoinformatics (Geoinformatics 2012) held from 15 to 17 June 2012 at Hong Kong SAR, China. Five articles have been peer reviewed and accepted for publication in this special issue of the Annals of Geographical Information Science in 2012. We thank all authors and reviewers for their contributions to the special issue. The research is partially funded by the Natural Science Foundation of China (41171140).
