Abstract

One-unit photovoltaic electrolyzers which take advantage of the high voltage output of amorphous silicon photovoltaic cells will be described. These consist of either double-stacked, or triple-stacked, amorphous silicon (pin) series, interconnected cell structures, coated on the dark sides with electrocatalyst layers. Only the electrocatalyst layers are in direct contact with the solution, and solar light is incident at the glass substrate/air interfaces.
