Abstract

Benzoic acid is one of the major products from the photodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons that are emitted into the atmospheric environment from natural and anthropogenic sources, e.g., oil spill, crude oil refining, and automobile exhaust fumes. Analytical methods using HPLC, GC-MS, and high performance capillary electrophoresis were developed to identify the reaction products generated in the photochemical oxidation of benzoic acid in aqueous solution. Five phenolic acids, o-hydroxylbenzoic, m-hydroxylbenzoic, p-hydroxylbenzoic, 2,3-dihydroxylbenzoic, and 3,4-dihydroxylbenzoic acid, were identified as major intermediate photooxidation products of benzoic acids.
