Abstract

Simple and rapid HPLC, HPCE, and GC/MS methods were developed to the identification and quantitation of photooxidation products of benzoic acid in aqueous solutions. After irradiation under 254 or 300 nm monochromatic light, benzoic acid and its photooxidation products were separated using HPLC with a methanol-acetate-water gradient elution system on a C18 reversed-phase column or using HPCE with a fused-silica capillary and a diode array detector. Five phenolic acids, o-hydroxybenzoic, m-hydroxybenzoic, p-hydroxybenzoic, 2,3-dihydroxylbenzoic, and 3,4-dihydroxylbenzoic acid, were identified as major intermediate photooxidation products of benzoic acid.
