Abstract

The paper presents the results of a study to analyze various merging algorithms and to determine their relative effectiveness in resolving merging conflicts under varying capacity and turn-rate conditions. Previous work on intersection control is briefly discussed. Discussions of various merge algorithms and the theoretical effectiveness of each, expressed in probabilistic terms as the miss-turn rate, are presented. The length of maneuver region, the maximum length of the string of vehicles required to maneuver, and other algorithm parameters are related to the resulting algorithm effectiveness.
