Supervisory Control of Cyber-Physical Systems under Periodic Sensor-Reading Modification Attacks

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contribution

Abstract

Periodic attacks pose a critical threat to cyber-physical systems, as they allow intruders to conserve resources while exerting sustained impact on the system. This work investigates periodic sensor-reading modification attacks at the supervisory control layer under the framework of discrete event systems. We first construct a closed-loop system under such attacks, which shows how they drive a system into unsafe states. Then, we introduce a concept of dynamically observable language to explore a robust supervisor capable of protecting the system under such attacks. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition to determine the existence of a robust supervisor and develop an algorithm to compute it.
