Abstract
Single crystal Raman and infrared spectra of barium azide, Ba(N 3)2, for all polarization orientations, were measured in the N3- symmetric stretching (ν1) spectral region between 1200 and 1400 cm-1. An interesting intensity anisotropy of the Raman and infrared peak at 1347 cm-1 has been observed with respect to polarization along the c direction. This has been related to the localization of one set of ν1 factor group component eigenvectors on asymmetric azide ions aligned closely parallel to the c axis.
