Abstract

This paper describes a new approach for target vehicle tracking in applications such as real time travel information, congestion planning, and accident prevention. The tracking system is based on a set of low cost digital camera and GPS receiver mounted on the probe vehicle which tracks the target vehicles within the forward and backward observability range. A feature extraction based position calculation algorithm is used and through it the pseudo GPS coordinates of the target vehicle is synthesized. It is verified experimentally that the tracking uncertainty is well within the GPS error and performance tolerance.
