Abstract
A representation is given to the results of experimental study into zinc sulfide synthesis in combustion wave. When fabricating samples of Zn-S mixture the dispersity of fusible component (sulphur) and pressing density varied within wide ranges. The mixture parameters were determined which provided for realization of self-propagating high temperature synthesis and the model of stable propagation of crystallization front was proposed. Aimed to reveal the nature of phases present in the system x-ray diffraction investigation of synthesized samples was carried out. Macrostructure was analyzed through photographs of sample cross-sections. An increase in average size of sulphur powder particles at high pressing density of the mixture was found to lead to a decrease of columnar crystal zone due to growth of active impurities in the melt and reduction of reacting efficiency.
